Viagra generics enter the Korean market

Pfizer's blue pill 'Viagra' has gone off patent, which caused a lot of excitement amongst Korean pharmaceutical firms as they are allowed to make generics of Viagra.

One day after Viagra's patent expired, Korean pharmaceutical company CJ released 'Heragra' in to the market. They sure didn't waste any time at all. They are certainly giving Pfizer a run for their money too by pricing Heragra at one third of its price. One pill of Viagra costs 13.60USD whilst one pill of Heragra costs less than 5USD. As a patient, the pricing difference will sure make Heragra the more appealing and cost effective option. (NOTE: Heragra is a terrible name, it doesn't roll off the tongue easily).

However, Pfizer came out with a statement:
"Pfizer held two different patents in regards to sildenafil. One was for the compound and the other for it's use in the treatment of erectile dysfunction."

This means CJ or any other Pharmaceutical company can manufacture sildenafil but they can't make health claims for erectile dysfunction for their products.

CJ were unsatisfied with this so they have filed a law suit against Pfizer.

Kmovie Review: Actresses (2009)

I’m a huge fan of documentaries and ‘Actresses’ is the first Korean documentary I have watched. ‘Actresses’ follows 6 leading ladies of Korean cinema at the Vogue Korea Magazine Photoshoot.

The 6 leading actresses are Choi Ji-woo, Yoon Yeo-Jeong, Lee Mi-sook, Ko Hyeon-jeong, Kim Min-hee and Kim ok-bin. The documentary focuses on the 6 actresses and how they interact together on set.

There are a few elements that make the documentary interesting to watch. The generational tension that is seen between the actresses was evident; whose ages span from 20s to 60s. In addition, a lot of drama was seen amongst the young actresses arguing who is the 'bigger' celebrity. Things got quite catty, but in comparison to American reality shows, it was rather tame.

Rumors had it that this film was scripted. It actually wasn’t, however, the director said each scene had an outline (similar to how TV show ‘Curb your enthusiasm’ is made). The outline required the actresses to improvise in the given scenario.

The director wanted to show the women’s character in real life. When I was watching the film, some sections felt contrived – like the actress was putting up a performance. Which reminded me of the quote shown in the opening credits of the film:

'There are 3 types of people in this world, Men, Women and Actresses'.

There were some delightfully funny moments between the actresses when they start to warm up to each other.

I was most surprised about Choi Ji-woo’s diva antics. We’re so familiar with her girl next door image in movies and TV dramas, so it was surreal to watch the ‘real’ her being a diva and having a whinge. She’s a convincing actress, however ironically in this film she comes off as over acting.

This documentary doesn’t feel authentic. I would actually label it as a mockumentary. I'll give it 3/5 stars.

Kmovie review: Chilling romance (aka Spellbound 2011)

Two film genres that the Korean film industry excels in are romcoms and horrors. So it was just a matter of time when we saw the marriage of the two genres to produce one terrifying love story.

‘Chilling romance’ stars South Korea’s sweet heart Son Ye-Jin. It’s a welcome return for her to the big screen. Her last film was ‘Into The White Night’ in 2009. She plays Yu-Ri, an odd woman with a secretive life. When we are first introduced to her character in the movie, she looks a bit emo.

The leading male in this horror romance is played by Lee Min-Ki. His character Jo-Goo is a street magician who found Yu-Ri as the inspiration for his horror magic show. He invites her to join his magic show as part of the production crew. When Yu-Ri joined the team, his show became a huge success and he was enjoying fame and fortune.

Jo-Goo doesn’t understand why Yu-Ri is anti-social and distances herself with everyone around her. When he pays her a surprise visit in her home, he sees an odd little boy whom he doesn’t realize is a ghost. That boy follows him home and he quickly realizes the boy and other ghosts have come to haunt him.

Yu-Ri soon reveals her terrifying secret to Jo-Goo and tells him to stay away from her. But he couldn’t because he had developed feelings for her. Although he is frightened of all the ghosts he is determined to be with her.

The ghosts are angry with the situation and want to drive Jo-Goo away from Yu-Ri like they did with everyone close to her. They go after Jo-Goo.

I love romcoms but cannot watch horror flicks. So this film was an interesting experience for me. When the scary music started, I knew it was my cue to close my eyes LOL! I did manage to watch some of the scary scenes and they were scary! It reminded me of ‘The Ring’ and ‘The Grudge’.

I really enjoyed this horror twist to the romcom, it added a new dimension to the genre. The ending wasn’t as strong as the rest of the film, it was OK.

Son Ye-Jin’s character evolved from weird to a typical girl in a Korean romcom. I would have liked to see her character a bit more eccentric and quirky.

Enjoyable film 3.5/5 stars

Kpop Superstar Rain begins his Military Service

After months of delay, the day has finally come for Rain to join the military. Today marks Rain's first day as an active soldier, he will be required to serve for at least 2 years. This news have been making headlines around the world, here is Time magazine's article.

Hundreds of his devoted fans gathered in front of the military base to see their idol before he began life as a soldier. Rain gave a military salute to his tearful fans before he walked in to boot camp in Uijeongbu, Seoul.

Rain has been working non-stop before his enlistment date: touring Korea with 'The Best Show' to farewell his fans, recording new music 'Busan Woman' and filming a movie 'Red Scarfe'.

Rain is one of the most successful Entertainers from Korea, achieving global success in 2004 when he released his hit album 'It's Raining' and starred in the hit TV dramedy show 'Full House'. He has traveled a path that others hadn't, starting his own record label, fashion line and pursuing a Hollywood Acting Career.

His profile has grown in the United States over the past few years. He starred in blockbuster films 'Speed Racer' and 'Ninja Assassin'. Time Magazine named him in their '100 Most Influential People List'.

Rain's story is inspiring. When he was auditioning for entertainment agencies, he was rejected many times. They told him that he was talented, but not good looking enough because he didn't have double eyelids. Rain kept believing in his dream and he had the self confidence to not get the popular double eyelid surgery. Eventually he met his manager, JYP - the man that would turn Rain in to a global star.

Rain will be greatly missed in the entertainment industry. His fans have tweeted many messages telling him that they are waiting for him.

Take Care Rain!!

Odd Things I Saw - Virtual Shop, South Korea

The first Virtual Shop has opened in Seoul!!! Let me explain, the store is real, but the products are all virtual. The store (Homeplus) will have images of 500 products ranging from milk, egg, pasta sauce, tissues, cameras - To buy these items, all the customer needs to do is to scan the product barcode using their smartphone! Cool hey?

All the items you buy will be delivered to your house. That will save you from carrying bags of groceries to the car.

The first virtual stores was opened at Seolleung Train Station in Southern Seoul. The train station has around 200,000 commuters everyday. They can expect many shoppers to visit their virtual store.

If you think that wasn't cool enough, Homeplus is also planning to launch the Homeplus app in February. This will allow customers to get direct access to the Virtual shop.

Homeplus CEO Lee Seung-hand said store chains need to respond quickly to changing consumer behaviour, and the virtual store will cater for skyrocketing smartphone users in Korea.

I wonder if this virtual shop idea will come to Australia anytime soon?

Kmovie Review : Haru - An Extraordinary Day in Korea (2010)

Tourism marketing is getting more and more inventive as time goes on. Forget those 2 minute TV ads starring sun tanned models, with odd slogans 'Where the bloody hell are you'. Tourism campaigns are getting more creative, slicker and BIGGER - think Tourism Australia inviting Oprah and her audience for 'The Ultimate Outback Adventure'. That campaign was mammoth - generating huge buzz world wide. I wonder how Tourism Australia plans to top that one.

Korea 'thought outside of the box' and took a unique approach to promoting tourism - by making a Movie. Well a short movie to be exact, the film is 30 minutes. Who should star in this tourism film? The next generation of Hallyu stars, including Kim Bum, U-Kiss, Big Bang, Han Chae Young.

It is an interesting concept for tourism. Hallyu stars - 'Korean wave' are highly popular worldwide, it is ideal for them to star in this film to promote Korean tourism.

The film starts off with a huge bang, literally - a man is running away from missiles shot out of a plan... Not what you would expect for a tourism film. It left me completely puzzled.

The film then bounces around to different scenes with different actors. We see Kim Bum on the train flirting with a girl; Han Chae Young as a secret agent; Big Bang on a playground. It feels like someone randomly put a romcom, an action and a drama movie in to a blender and ended up with a big old mess.

It's all over the place, it felt like a tourism advert that was 28 minutes too long. It did not showcase Korea. The whole time we see the actors smile and smile somem more. The whole time during the movie I was thinking, what am I watching? There'z no storyline, so it's not a film. They aren't promoting anything, it's not an ad. I have no idea what it is.

The film seems to be aimed for young teen girls, they will sure enjoy staring at their idols in this film. All the actors look good in this film.

I was underwhelmed watching this film, the film didn't meet its aim in promoting Korea tourism.

In a tweet - Miranda Kerr wearing Korea's Han Bok

There is always something interesting happening in twitterverse. Well this week, Australian supermodel Miranda Kerr tweeted that she was going to Korea for work. While she was there she did an interview on MBC wearing Korea’s traditional dress the Han Bok.

She looks really pretty wearing the Han Bok. You can follower her tweets @MirandaKerr. Watch out for this interview on youtube.http://www.blogger.com/img/blank.gif

When I was in Korea last year, I wore the Han Bok for photos. While wearing it, I felt like a little girl because the skirt is so big - like a princess’s dress. The Han Bok is very comfortable to wear. I took about a zillion photos around the palace wearing the Han Bok LOL!

Martian Virus TV - Girl who hasn't brushed her teeth for 10 years!! (oh I feel bad for her boyfriend)

There is this weird korean TV show called 'Martian Virus', where guests share their odd stories. When you get the chance you should youtube Martian Virus to watch previous guests on the show. Some guests include a man marrying his pillow girlfriend (This is quite common in Japan and Korea is catching on). Another guests claims her diet consists of chocolate, chocolate and more chocolate. The odd thing about this story is - she's very slim. How can someone who claims to eat 1.2 tonnes of chocolate be a size 4-6.

The story I want to talk about is this 20 year old woman Ji Hyun Ji. She claims to have stopped brushing her teeth 10 years ago. The last time she brushed her teeth was when her mum brushed it for her. She's so lazy!!!!! I can't believe it.

She says "I do not understand why people should brush their teeth, as it is not like others will look into your mouth. As food scrapples piles on, they will actually protect my teeth"

I'm dumbfounded... where do you begin to argue with her logic

She goes on saying, she only wipes her front teeth with a tissue on special occasions.

With the help of a dentist and experts on the show, they will try to convince this woman to brush her teeth!!

I can't imagine what her breath and teeth will be like. I'm quite horrified - I'm really fussy about taking care of my teeth.

Odd Things I saw – 2010 WRAP UP

This is one of my favourite segments on the show. It’s a segment where I talk about Odd things I saw on holiday or in my everyday life. Our ‘Odd things I saw’ gallery has expanded during the year, I’m going to reflect on some of my favourite ones.

There are a lot of odd things in Japan, like cucumber flavoured coke? Cherry blossom flavoured Kit Kat! Their confectionary is far more diverse than our boring selection. We only have one flavoured Kit Kat, they have about 30! Another funny one is the Tokyo Tower mascot, it’s a huge long pink thing… yes… well you can have a look at the picture yourself. It looks like a pink crayon in overalls. Little kids hug it when they go on school excursions to Tokyo Tower. LOL

In Korea I saw some interesting stuff too. Deep fried bees, are you game enough to eat it? I wasn’t, but it was such a novelty to have a look at it.

My friend’s watch also made it on this segment. It’s no ordinary watch, it’s so much cooler than all the other watches in the world! It’s a binary watch!! It doesn’t have the normal hour and second hands ticking away. The watch face consists of numbers 1 and 0 running across the screen and you have to add them up to tell the time! Cool or Geeky? It’s a bit of both.

I have a new Odd Things I saw for this week. Triumph Japan, the bra company released a new high tech tourist bra. The inspiration for this bra comes from the tour guide’s uniform (Isn’t that an interesting source of inspiration for a bra), its more of a bustier than a bra. Features of the bra include: a display of sightseeing spots (that means you can put photos on the bustier), three buttons that you can press and it will emit audio greetings in 3 languages (English, Japanese and Korean). On the sides of the bustier are slots for tourist flag poles. If that doesn’t sound ridiculous enough, there is even skirt that is attachable to the bustier and it can flip up to reveal a map of Japan. Somehow I don’t think tour guides in Japan will be wearing these bustiers and skirts anytime soon. It is quite a funny story thought.

Fines for picking up acorns in public, South Korea

It’s interesting reading about what you can get fined for in different countries. In Australia you will be fined for jaywalking. In Japan, shopkeepers will get fined if they don’t keep their shop front as in the pavement spick and span.

In South Korea, people who are caught picking acorns in national theme parks will be hit with a heavy fine or even time behind bars. A government organisation said these measures are necessary to improve survival rates of wildlife.

The Korea National Park Service will heavily monitor the grounds to ensure people don’t pick nuts, fruits or berries. People picking up a few handfuls will be fined 100,000 won (100USD). In more severe cases, people may face up to 3 years in prison or a fine up to 30 million won (~27,000USD).

During autumn, the acorn season wildlife such as squirrels and Asian Black Bears rely on oak as a major food source. Asian black bears are categorised as Level 1 on the Endangered Species List.

Kimchi Crisis

Kimchi is a staple vegetable in the Korean diet and it’s always eaten with every meal. Koreans have a very spicy palette, they love chilli so much they put a huge amount of it in their cooking. I remember the first time I ate Korean food, it was so hot it felt like smoke was coming out of my ears. The kimchi side dish is spicy too, it contains lots of chilli as well but it is quite tasty.

Photo of a typical meal I ate in Korea. Look at all the little side dishes! This is for LUNCH!!!

The traditional kimchi making season has come under threat due to shortage of fresh vegetables! The shortage was caused by unusually heavy rainfall for the past few months. That has resulted in cabbage prices to skyrocket to 10,000 won (10AUD) per napa cabbage, which is four times the normal price.

The prices of other important ingredients in Korean diets like radish and garlic are also experiencing inflation.

Kimchi manufacturers have already raised the prices of their products. Even restaurants have started to charge for kimchi, which is usually a complementary dish in Korean meals.

The traditional kimchi making season occurs at the end of fall. Families will busily make kimchi for the winter. However, due to soaring vegetable prices it is expected to hit the nation right at the hip pocket.

A Korean restaurant owner said, “I’m not sure if I should start to charge kimchi or exclude it from the side dishes. I have never experienced such a shortage of cabbage in my ten years as a chef running this restaurant.”

Many housewives have decided to skip kimchi making season altogether due to the inflated prices.

The government have taken action due to this huge concern; they will lower taxes on some of the vegetables and import 150 tonnes of fresh vegetables from China. These actions will help stabilise consumer prices after they hit a 17 month high in September.

Escape to Virtual Reality where all your problems and stress disappear: Virtual Game Addiction

We all deal with stress differently, I like to listen to music to tune out from the world, in a story I did a few weeks ago Japanese people like to watch Jellyfish because it results in a compound being released in saliva that promotes relaxation. I don’t know what this compound is; I still can’t find the scientific paper on this. Another way to relieve stress or at least escape it (for a while) is to play virtual world computer games like second life. These role playing games can be highly addictive to some and it seems the more they play the more they retreat in to this virtual world.

People can create their desired life in this virtual world. Kim Myung, a 20 year old student was under intense pressure from his parents to get in to university, but he failed the university entrance exams. Kim gradually retreated in to the virtual world where he can feel invincible there. He’ll spend countless hours in front of the computer screen, he became so addicted that he played from 8am until midnight for more than four months. He gained 5 kilos during this time and he only survived on 2 minute noodles.

Experts describe South Korea as home to the world’s most extreme gamer culture. I thought that title belonged to Japan, but I guess that title has been passed on to South Korea. In April 2006, the South Korean government launched a game addiction hotline. In 2002, a treatment centre for video addicts was opened. Hundreds of private hospitals and psychiatric clinics have opened units to treat this serious problem.

Statistics from 2006 estimated that 2.4 percent of the population from 9 to 39 are believed to be suffering from game addiction. Another 10 percent were found to be ‘borderline cases’, this is defined as an obsession with playing electronic games to a point of being sleep deprived, it disrupts daily life and loosing a grip on reality. These feelings are usually coupled with a sense of withdrawal when they don’t play the games and depression. ‘Borderline cases’ sound quite severe, think about how extreme the symptoms are for gaming addicts.

The situation is so severe that in 2005, 10 South Koreans (mostly in their teens or twenties) died from game addiction related causes. Most of the deaths were attributed to a disruption in blood circulation caused by sitting in a single, cramped position for too long termed ‘economy class syndrome’.

Experts say, gaming itself is not the problem, like anything else it is about excessive use. More cases of game addiction are being reported in industrialised nations, particularly the US and Japan. South Korea has been identified as the epicentre of the problem.

Many young South Koreans face massive educational pressures that far exceed those endured by their peers in other countries. An easy escape from this is to play video games especially online, interactive role playing games. These games allow players to interact with other players online. Online games are hot in South Korea because South Korea is the most wired nation in the world. In 2006 nearly 70 percent of households had superfast broadband connections, compared to 45 percent of Japanese and 33 percent of Americans.

Mental health counselling carries a heavy stigma in South Korea. It is hard to get the sufferers the help they require. The society needs to talk about this issue more openly so people can identify the problem and get the help they need.

Rain's TV Drama 'Fugitive' debuts with high ratings

Rain’s new TV Dramedy ‘Fugitive’ made its debut in Korea yesterday with awesome ratings, 20.7%! That's a brilliant start for the show and it will be great to see if they can maintain this high rating! I think it can with its stellar cast that includes Lee Na Young, Lee Jung Jin, Daniel Henney and its extensive shooting locations that include Korea, Japan, China, Thailand! It has potential to be one of the best korean TV dramas.

I can’t wait to watch it because Rain is in it. His one of my favourite actors because he takes risks in his role choices and that is evident with the film ‘I’m a cyborg and that’s ok’, where he plays a mental patient in the hospital. That film didn’t do well at the box office but he proud of his work in that film because it meant something to him. Rain will star in one more movie before he commences his compulsory military service next year. Every Korean male has to serve for two years, Rain will be out of the spotlight for two whole years. I think all of his fans will miss him dearly. Including me =O

Project Lotus Update – More Celebrity Judges are named

Exciting news! Members of the Spice Girls are signed on to judge and mentor the contestants on Project Lotus (names haven’t been disclosed yet, I would love Posh to do it). Hong Kong Superstar Karen Mok was also named as a judge along with former GRAMMY Foundation Chair Steve Schnur.

As mentioned in my previous entries, Project Lotus will be made in to a TV reality show that is slated to be broadcasted early next year. It won’t be anything like ‘Idol’, ‘X Factor’ because the public doesn’t get to vote for their favourite. The show will be purely based on the journey to find the superstar girl band. The judges will have complete control of selecting the girls that make up the band. It will be interesting to see if the public agrees with their decision once the members of the band has been unveiled.

The TV show plan to celebrate the good side of the girls characters only. It sounds like they want everyone to get along like a happy family, as seen in Masterchef. The majority of reality TV shows want drama and cattiness for entertainment value, like Top Model, Big Brother. So it’ll be interesting to see if Project Lotus will make good TV viewing.

The girls will be from five different countries so there will be cultural differences and possibly language barriers if their English isn’t strong. The girls would be in a competitive environment and I expect friction might occur. Creative director-producer Eliot Kennedy expects the girls to bond closely with each other and form a strong team network in this journey.

The five finalists from Korea have been selected! The lucky girls have not been unveiled to the public yet.

A total of 16 songs have already been composed by the talented songwriters that include Gary Barlow. Popular music in the five countries are uniquely different, would they try to blend it all in or give the girls a poppy sound like Spice girls, R’n’B sound like Pussycat Dolls. The question is how will Project Lotus make a musical impact to the world?

Odd things I saw…. Fuel Pumps, Korea

When I was in Korea, I was walking around in the morning and walked pass the Petrol Station. In Australia, all the pumps are lined up on the ground. In Korea, it’s not like that at all. The fuel pumps are actually dangling down from the ceiling. The ground below is actually empty space. It’s not self service in Korea either, there are attendants that fill up the car for you. You don’t have to get out of your car at all. To get the pump from the ceiling, the attendant has to pull on a lever. I think it’s a pretty cool idea to have pumps in the ceiling because you know you will get all the petrol out of the pump. When I fill up, I know some fuel is left behind in the tangled pump line, but you can’t do anything about it. Also, pumps in the ceiling saves space.

Miss Universe 2010

The biggest beauty pageant in the whole universe, galaxy was broadcasted on the 24th of August in the Party Capital of USA, Las Vegas. Beauties from 83 nations participated in this years Miss Universe competition.

I love watching Miss Universe, its part of my staple TV viewing for the year alongside the Oscars, Emmys, Logies. The glamour, the national costume contest, question time its all just so entertaining to watch.

Asia was well represented this year with China, Korea, Japan, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Indonesia and India taking part this year. Interestingly Vietnam withdrew from competition. Philippines did incredibly well this year making it to top 5. She had a lot of support from the audience, every time she was on stage her cheer squad cheered so loud for her. None of the other girls got quite the same reception.

Australia’s Jesinta Campbell, a fresh faced 19 year old Brisbane girl did Australia very proud with her 2nd runner up and Miss Congeniality win. Her National costume was a bit odd, she wore high heeled ugg boots… enough said lol, but she is proud of her costume and I think that is awesome.

The national costume contest is a highlight of the show for me. I love seeing the outrageously, bright, feathery over the top costumes the contestants wear. Paris wore the Eiffel Tower on her head. Maybe Australia should have worn the Opera House on her head? I thought China’s costume was very simple this year, not really a standout. The costumes are quite theatrical and huge! It must need its own suitcase when packing.

In the evening wear category, most girls chose soft pastel colours. Mexico wore a show stopping cherry red dress. She really stood out in that category and the dress had so much movement when she walked, it really flattered her body. She won the contest! Congrats to Miss Mexico!

Son Dambi – The Female version of RAIN

A few years ago I took Hip Hop classes at Monash University. I absolutely loved in and during that time I had a quest to be the female version of Rain. In dance classes you dance in front of a mirror so you can see your form and... I saw how tragic I was LOL! When I do the moves it doesn't look quite cool or right really. I still tried to work on my hip hop attitude and dance moves. The thing is, someone has beaten me to the title of female Rain and that is Son Dambi! She made her debut 3 years ago when she was 24. During her rigorous training years she studied hip hop under famous choreographers in the US. She loved dancing so much she paid 6K each month for her dancing lessons in the US, whilst over there she fell in love with the intense dance style Krumping. It is evident that Son Dambi is an awesome dancer. Not only did she receive the best dance training she also has the talent and natural ability. She can pick up dance moves and routines very quickly.

I really love her style of music which is hip hop, dance, electro. On Youtube there are videos of her teaching dance routines to her songs, I've posted 'Cry eye' on our youtube Page. I've been trying to learn the dance steps and it's quite hard. She makes it look so effortless and stylish. I am determined to master the dance steps and If i get good enough i will record it and post up my progress on facebook.

Project Lotus Update

Project Lotus Update: A quick recap on what project Lotus is, it's the search for Asia's answer to the Spice Girls! Auditions are being held in Asia to find five talented singers to form a new girl band that will be launched worldwide. I decided to start my quest to be a popstar so I sent in my video audition on their facebook. I've been checking their facebook for updates and there has been a lot of confusion about how the auditioning process worked. People thought that they can submit a video audition, but turns out that it would be advantageous to attend a live audition in the 5 countries. The five selected countries are China, Japan, Korea, Philipines and India. I only auditioned online so I hope that is enough for them to see my music talents

I got some information about the Korean live auditions. 25 year old Lim Miru from Australia flew the distance to Korea to audition live. Amazingly, she had only found out about the live auditions 3 days earlier, after stumbling upon it on youtube. That is perseverance. A total of 85 girls attended the live auditions in Korea, singing popular songs by Beyonce, Whitney Houstan, Christina Aguilera. They are still shortlisting the applicants and successful girls will proceed to the second live auditions held on Aug 24. Five finalists from each country will go to Hong Kong for an intense training and auditioning process like Masterchef and Idol. Eliminations will occur every week until five girls are left standing. All the drama will be broadcast on TV early next year in a reality tv show. It is an intense process for the girls but it is a lifetime opportunity because they get to work with grammy award winning producers, songwriters – The ultimate dream team.

Back to my audition, I haven't heard back from Project Lotus… hmmm… Just a reminder I sang Justin Bieber's no. 1 song Baby mashed up with ‘Saddest song’ by Cherry and ‘Someday soon’ by Natalie Bassingthwaighte. I still have my fingers crossed! I check my video on facebook and it has 5 likes so that’s cool =D Good luck to all the girls that auditioned!
